Salt storage

Geislingen an der Steige, Germany

The materiality, form and details of the hall have been consistently developed in accordance with the structural and utility requirements of salt storage.
Design: The changed logistics in the distribution of salt for spreading have also led to changes in the requirements for the partition and entry height (9 m) of the salt storage facility: a new building type has been created. The design and construction of the space is based on the specific requirements of salt storage. The design chosen reduces the number of metal components susceptible to damage. The few, unavoidable joints can be inspected and maintained at any time. Corrugated salt-resistant PVC panels guarantee the lightening and structural protection of the wood. The inclined timber partitions reduce the proportion of reinforced concrete partitions and increase the storage capacity.

Wood: Salt damages most building materials. But because salt preserves wood, all the building components inside the building are made of wood. The most common problem that occurs with salt storage is that salt reaches structural voids and causes damage to the building. All building components are therefore designed to be completely open and void-free. The joints between the timber structure and the reinforced concrete lysers are made with two alloy steel threaded rods. Their condition can be checked at any time, and they can be replaced if necessary.
