Gsies/Valle di Casies, Italy

A modern 16th century farm house 1 | A modern 16th century farm house
A historical farmhouse, originally built in the 16th century, was faithfully rebuilt using original material and careful amended with modern-day amenities.
Design: The Veidlerhof in Ampfertal, the highest situated hamlet of the municipality of Gsies/Valle di Casies, was the only farmstead in the ensemble that had remained almost unchanged throughout the centuries. The 16th century main building had been constructed in the typical regional style of its time, a squared timber block house set on top of a brick basement. After decades of neglect, the historical building was left in bad shape.

Wood: The private owners decided to rebuild the farm house completely, with some careful additions in order to serve as a holiday home. The original building was carefully dismantled, with all logs, panels, and doors numbered, stored, repaired, and then reset in their original configuration at a new plot within the farm. The historical wood (locally procured between the years 1531 and 1536) was kept and only replaced by new wood if necessary. The furnishings, such as beds and tables, were carpentered out of wood from a demolished annex. The project aimed to make use of unprocessed wood and related materials as much as possible.
